A Brief History
(Click here for a more detailed history)

Priority - Mental HealthFounded in 1914 as The Buckinghamshire Voluntary Association for the Care of the Mentally Defective.

For nearly 100 years we have endeavoured to provide a much-needed service for those residents of the county of Buckinghamshire and surrounding areas who are less fortunate than ourselves.

In 1948 the association changed its name to The Bucks Association for Mental Welfare and agreed to provide services for patients suffering from mental illness.

Another step in the process of keeping abreast with modern developments came in 1972 with another name change to The Buckinghamshire Association for Mental Health (BAMH), a name that identifies the revised object of providing services for the mentally ill. The work undertaken changed in focus from training and education to providing social contact and support for the mentally ill in the community.

An extract from the original constitution explains:

The objects of the association shall be to:
promote mental health and to assist in relieving and rehabilitating persons suffering from mental disorder or conditions of emotional or mental distress requiring advice or treatment.
