The Educational Psychology Service provides an open access consultation service. We focus on children and young people, whose teachers and/or families have concerns about their learning, language or communication, behaviour, emotional or social development in educational and community contexts. We prioritise involvement with vulnerable children who have complex needs. We apply psychology to bring about change at individual, group and whole system levels. Every school has a named link Educational Psychologist (EP). EP consultation is planned and prioritised through regular contact although we provide an immediate response to critical incidents affecting school communities.

Referral methods: Completion of a Common Referral request for Educational Psychology Involvement with parent/guardian consent and supporting documentary evidence following discussion with the school's special educational needs coordinator for school-aged children. We also consider requests from other educational professionals, health professionals and paediatricians for pre-school children, for whom there are concerns or barriers or via Common Assessment Framework requests for Early Intervention or Prevention

Open: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

8:30am - 5pm

Except: Fri 8:30am - 4:30pm

Description: EP service delivery is based on the principle of equal access for all children and young people, their parents/carers and other professionals.

Our work with schools includes:

  • Consultation, problem-solving, training for school staff, children and young people and parents/carers;
  • Involvement in multi-agency meetings, TAC, TAP and early intervention advice
  • Psychological assessment and therapeutic intervention;
  • Preparation of written psychological advice on behalf of the LA in relation to its statutory functions under the Education Act (1996);
  • Responding to critical incidents affecting schools.

All maintained schools have a named link Educational Psychologist and Senior EP for the Local Delivery Area. EP involvement regarding an individual child or young person will depend on the complexity and severity of the presenting needs and the capacity of the service.
