However to get the most out of the forum you will need to register, this is totally free and you will not receive any unsolicited email.

Registering:
When you sign up you will have to decide on a username and password as well as providing your email address. Feel free to sign up under your own name, nickname or a made up name to protect your anonymity or just for fun. If you are a member of staff or service user, you are welcome to sign up with a staff / user account as well as a personal account.

There are also many optional questions and preferences you can set when you register, these can be changed later if you wish. The first 3 will be displayed on your profile page. The options are as follows:
  • ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo messenger: If you have joined any of these chat programs then enter the info here if you want people to be able to contact you on that chat network.
  • Website: Your web site address.
  • Location, Occupation & Interests: If you wish to share these please fill in the fields.
  • Always show my email. If you select yes then people will be able to get your email address.
  • Notify of replies. I recommend you set this to yes. If you start a topic then you can receive an email when someone replies to it.
  • Notify of private message & pop-up on private message. I recommend setting these to yes. The forum enables all registered users to contact other registered users in your forum mailbox, a notification will be sent by email and pop up when you visit when you have new mail to save you checking it yourself.

What can i do on the forums?

Read or post messages. You might want to start a new conversation or post some news or information. Also you can reply to or join in other conversations posted by other visitors. A forum is a great place to make information available, learn new things, make new friends, share your interests and experiences, research and much more. The community forum is a little like a mini website the content of which is solely governed by it's registered members.

Post or download documents or photos. You can add an attachment to a message by starting a new post, browsing for a file and clicking "add attachment", just like you might in an email.

Create a poll. You can simply add a poll to a new post. You will need to set a question and any number of options for people to vote on. The results will be automatically updated and displayed as a bar chart with your post.

Search the forum. You can search all the text in the forum for a specific word or words.

Create a profile. Share information about your occupation, location and interests on your own profile page.

Posting messages
Visit the forum in which you want to post and click on the "New topic" button.
"Subject" should be the short title / description of your message. It is what people will click on before actually reading your message.
"Message body" is where you can type in your message.
You can add "emoticons / smilies" in your message by clicking on the one you like (it will appear as text in your message box until you submit it).
Change text size or colour. Highlight your text and select a colour and size if you want to highlight something.
The buttons:
B: This will make any text you highlight appear bold (it will add [b] around the text until it is submitted).
i: As above but your text will appear as italic or slanted text (it will add [i] around the text until it is submitted).
u: As above but your text will appear underlined (it will add [u] around the text until it is submitted).
url: If you have typed in a web address (http://.....) then highlight it and click this "url" button to enable people to click on the link.
Further options are only for if you want to attach a document/image or create a poll.
Then click "Submit" to post your message, or "Preview" to see how others will see your message.

Replying to messages
To reply to a message simply click the "post reply" button on the right hand side of the page above and below the message.
The page has mostly the same options as seen above in "Posting messages", however you can't start a poll when you are replying. When replying there will also be a reference summary of the text you are replying to at the bottom of the page.

Uploading documents
You can upload / atttach a document (pdf, word or image) to your post or reply. To do this follow the steps above to reply to or create a message. Below your message there is an "Add an attachement" option, simply "Browse" for the file you want to upload and then click "Add attachment", there will be a pause as your file is uploaded after which you will see a list of the attachments added. Then all you need to do is press submit to post your message.

Creating a poll
Any registered member can create or vote on a poll. To create a poll click "New topic" in a forum, and enter a message about your poll as you would with any post. Then at the bottom of the page you will see "Add a poll". The poll can have one question and 6 or 7 options to vote on. When you have entered a question, enter the first option in the box below and click "Add option". Repeat this process until all the options you want have been added, if your poll is time limited enter how many days you want it to run for (normally leave this blank) and click "Preview" or "Submit".

How do i edit my profile and preferences?
To edit or update your profile and preferences click "Profile" in the Forum menu on any page.

How do i contact another member?
There are a few ways to contact a member. Either click on their name or the "Profile" button at the bottom of one of their posts to go to their profile and then opt to either send that person an "email" or "pm" (private message). You will also see "email" and "pm" buttons at the bottom of a members post. Not all members will be contactable by email, and it is probably better to use the "pm" option if you don't know them. A "pm" private message will go to the members forum inbox and they will be notified next time they login.

How do i know if a topic has new messages?
The most active posts will automatically appear at the top of results. You can also watch a topic by visiting it and clicking "Watch topic", you will then be notified when there is a new message in this topic. Forums and topics with new posts will also be indicated by an orange instead of white icon alongside it.

How do i edit or delete my message?
You can edit only your own posts by clicking the "edit" button alongside your post. If you want a post deleted please contact the user "admin".
