Overview Blue Light Training

Mental health training for the emergency services

Emergency service personnel operate in some of the most challenging workplace environments but often receive limited mental health support and face high levels of stigma.

In response to this, Mind have developed a range of tailored training sessions for blue light personnel.

The Blue Light Programme has been running since 2015, providing mental health support for emergency services staff and volunteers from ambulance, fire, police and search and rescue services across England and Wales, as well as practical and positive ways for staff and volunteers to stay well.

Through the programme, from 2015 to 2019:

  • Local Minds have supported over 1500 blue light personnel across England and Wales through face-to-face support and training.
  • Over 100 blue light services and associations have shown their commitment to better mental health by signing or re-signing the Blue Light Time to Change pledge.
  • Over 3000 passionate Blue Light Champions have courageously spoken out about mental health, helping to change the way it’s seen within emergency services.
  • Trained over 9000-line managers in how to better support their staff.

All the courses are evidence-based and developed to be specific to each emergency service. You can find the evaluations of our training courses here.

The blue light programme aims to:

  • Support blue light staff and volunteers to be more aware of and responsive to their own mental health issues and those of their colleagues and be more resilient and better able to manage their own mental health.
  • Provide improved access to information on mental wellbeing and mental health problems
  • Empower blue light employers and voluntary organisations to be more aware of the importance of employee mental health, better equipped to support the mental health of their staff and volunteers and prepare to address mental health stigma and discrimination.
  • Challenge stigmatising attitudes that stop people with mental health problems getting the help and support they need.

As an introduction to this programme and thanks to National Mind funding, we’ll be running Resilience Training, Call Handler Training and New Recruits Training for free, which will be available to up to fifteen participants per course. Following this initial introductory phase, all courses will be available with a fee involved.

List of Courses:

  • Managing Mental Health in the Emergency Services
  • Blue Light Call Handler Training
  • Blue Light new recruits: mental health and resilience training Blue Light Peer Support Training

Blue Light

Peer Support Training

The principles of peer support have underpinned the work Mind have done to recruit and train blue light Champions. During the Blue Light Programme, nearly 3000 emergency service personnel across England and Wales signed up to support their colleagues, and change the way mental health is seen within the emergency services.
