We know that our Befriending service makes a real difference. People who use the service tell us that our volunteer Befrienders have helped them to manage their mental health and to overcome anxiety and isolation. We are proud of this service and the fantastic work the volunteers and Befriending team do.
Unfortunately, in March 2025, the core funding for this service ceased. Since then, we have been working hard to raise the funds needed to keep it going. Although we have had some success, we have not been able to secure the full amount needed to continue running this service, and I am therefore saddened to say it will close at the end of this year.
This has not been an easy decision for us, and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every person involved in the service over the years. The dedication and commitment shown by the staff and volunteers has led to thousands of successful befriending partnerships since the service started, with 136 being formed last year. People who use the service tell us that our volunteer Befrienders have helped them to manage their mental health, overcome anxiety and isolation, with some describing it as life-saving.
We understand how important this service is to so many people and that this will be difficult news to read. We remain committed to providing one-to-one support in the community to those who need it and are exploring new ways in which we can do this in 2026.
