There’s a lot in the media this time of year about New Year’s resolutions and making changes to ourselves and our lives, which can put us under a lot of pressure.

What’s really important is to focus on your wellbeing and the things that make us happy.

This can be simple things like going for a walk, playing with our children, reading a book or snuggling up with a hot drink. Making healthy choices that look after our wellbeing doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of time and money or giving up the things we love.

There are lots of things we can try to take care of our wellbeing (thank you to national Mind for these tips).

With shorter days and often gloomy weather, the Winter months can have a negative impact on our mental wellbeing.

Here are a few suggestions of some simple things we can all do to look after our mental health during the Winter.

  • Increase your exposure to natural light. Lack of natural light effects the hormones which are vital for our mental health. Going for a wintery walk, even if it’s just around the block, can be the perfect way to get some natural lights, fresh air and exercise along with a change of scenery. If that’s not possible, try to sit near a window during the daylight hours.
  • Exercise in a way that suits you. Research shows that exercise helps to manage stress and anxiety. Try to find something that you enjoy, so that it’s fun rather than a chore. You could go for a brisk walk or run, join an online class or try out chair yoga.
  • Eat healthy, balanced meals. Food and nutrition are closely linked to how we feel. Try and keep a balance to your diet with some fruit and vegetables. This can help us to avoid energy lows that can have an effect on our mood.
  • Keep to regular sleep patterns. Sleep has a huge impact on our mental health and wellbeing. Try to find routines and habits that help you to get the best possible night’s sleep. For example, keep your room dark, try not to look at screens in bed and go to bed at the same time each night, when possible.
  • Stay hydrated. Many of us find it difficult to drink as much water in the Winter as we do in the Summer months, so why not try drinking hot drinks such as herbal teas?
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. We know alcohol can affect our mood and mental health, so try not to overdo it during the festive season.
  • Meet up with friends or join a peer support group. Social interaction is vitally important for our wellbeing and helps combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. It’s also a great opportunity to share how you’re feeling with someone you trust.
